About

DHARAMSHALA

Dharamshala Himachal Pradesh

Dharamshala is a city in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by cedar forests on the edge of the Himalayas, this hillside city is home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile. The Thekchen Chöling Temple Complex is a spiritual center for Tibetan Buddhism, while the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives houses thousands of precious manuscripts.

Lower Dharamshala comprises a largely Indian community, while a Tibetan enclave lives uphill in the suburb of McLeod Ganj. Near the Dalai Lama’s main temple, Tsuglagkhang, is a Buddhist monastery known as Namgyal Gompa. The Tibet Museum provides a historical overview of Tibet’s occupation. Cultural establishments include the Norbulingka Institute, a haven for traditional Tibetan arts and crafts, and the Tibetan Institute for Performing Arts, which preserves Tibetan opera, music and dance. The city also offers trekking trails leading across the mountains to Triund, the upper Ravi Valley and beyond

There are many cheap and luxury hotels available in Dharamsala for accommodation. Most of the tourists prefer to stay in the Mcleodganj area as that has most of the notable places in Dharamshala. Some hotels are also available near the Bhagsu Nath Temple, and they are relatively cheaper too.

Please note:
Recently in December 2017, Himachal High Court issued strict orders to close down 116 properties that were illegally plying in and around Dharamshala and Mcleodganj. Directions were issued to the authorities for disconnecting water and electricity supply. We would recommend to re-check your reservations before leaving.

History Of Dharamshala

Dharamshala and the surrounding regions were a part of the Katoch Dynasty of Kangra for nearly two millennia. With the coming of the British Rule in India, Dharamshala became a part of the province of Punjab. The city as we see it today first came into being with the settlement of the 1st Gurkha Rifles near the site of a Hindu sanctuary on the slopes of Dhauladhar Hills. The name ‘Dharamshala’ was first used from this time onwards, due to the presence of the sanctuary. But the Gurkhas referred to this region as Bhagsu since they worshipped at the ancient Shiva temple of Bhagsunag. The town was also a popular summer vacation spot for the British. Then came the devastating earthquake of 1905. Much of the cantonment along with the Bhagsunag Temple was demolished by the quake. The Gurkhas later rebuilt the town and the temple, which came to be known as 1st Gurkha Rifles’ Heritage. But from this time, the popularity of Dharamshala decreased until the coming of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan refugees in 1959. Today, this town is an amicable mixture of Indians and Tibetans, with both contributing to the legacy of Dharamshala.
