A mecca for adventure sports enthusiasts, Manali is situated at 6,398 ft in the Himalayas. Located in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, its snow covered peaks make it a popular honeymoon destination. Considered the twin town of Kullu, Manali’s scenic beauty, history and culture give it the sobriquet of the Valley of the Gods. When hippies flocked the city in the ’60s and ’70s in pursuit of their utopian dream, Manali became very popular in the west. In the north-west to Manali we have Dalhousie. The hill station has the same effect on tourists today, with its waterfalls, rivers making their way through mountains, dense forest trails that run parallel to enormous cliffs with grand views of Dauladhar range in the distance and a couple of churches that were built during the British Raj. Cafes, markest, Mall Road, those are equally convincing reasons to plan a trip to Dalhousie.
The best way to reach Manali is to take an overnight bus from Delhi. Another best option is to take a cab from Delhi or Chandigarh to Manali. The nearest railways station is in Joginder Nagar which is 50 kms away, however, this isn't the best option to reach Manali as it is a narrow-gauge route and is incredibly slow.
Manali can also be reached from Leh by the Leh-Manali route, though it is open for only 4 or 5 months in a year during summers when the snow is removed by the Border Road Organization of India. Still, this road is very picturesque and is one of the most beautiful ways to reach Manali.
The nearest airport is Bhuntar, located at a distance of 50km from Manali and 10km from Kullu. Air India operates a flight from Delhi to Kullu, however, services are irregular and prices very high. You can hire a taxi to go to Manali from the airport or you can go to Kullu and take a bus which operates frequently on this route.
